Appealing to my target audience

My audience consists of 16-25 year old television thriller drama fans. I t can be harder to define things on ITVX as there are shows aimed at a broad range of audiences, though  I decided to make my thriller a crime/action as young adults and teenagers are typically more interested in violence and with uses and gratifications they can find entertainment. By making my main story focused around common issues young people face they may also find a sense of personal identity with the show, especially as the characters, including the ones on the poster, are within that age range, it could also educate any viewers unfamiliar with these topics. The location being a small town by the sea could also give my audience escapism if they live in a completely different area, or more personal identity if they live in a similar place.

Name/Tagline and Target Audience

Name A common theme across a lot of thrillers, especially ITVX ones, are the titles only have one or two words, a lot of these are a character’s name (presumably the main one), a word that connects to the story, or start with ‘The _.’ A lot of these titles are also in white or some other bright colour to contrast a dark background. On the spot I first came up with ‘The Unseen’, when considering the themes of my show this works however I decided on ‘Hidden’  instead which although simple I think has a much more quick, bold impact and creates a stronger sense of mystery. Tagline/date I’m not sure if my poster will actually have a tagline as almost all thriller posters I’ve seen only have a title and a little information about where to watch, however I’ll still com up with one as it could help the composition and make the genre/story clearer and more interesting. Based on my title and story, i decided on 'something lies deeper' as it reinforces this sense of unknowing and e...

Story and Photo Planning

Story Plan Two investigators (One is older and more experienced, but more laid back, the other is younger and more serious with a stronger sense of morals) are made to work together on cases involving vulnerable young people with things like drugs and gangs, as they get deeper into cases, they find police corruption and links back to one primary antagonist (this will be my second social group). Whist doing this the audience also looks into troubles they have in their home life/mental health, as maintaining a work/life balance becomes difficult and some of the actions they take to find clues questions their morals. Photo planning All will feature at least one of the two main characters, two of the posters can be of them posing together whist the other two can each focus on one character, one will feature the antagonist in the background to include my other social groups. I want a more neutral house style/colour scheme as that's what many of the posters I analysed/saw had, taken ei...

History of TV Thrillers

History of TV thrillers The genre became more popular in the early 1900s more in novels and movies before tv series, the genre has many variations that have appeared through the years, which are defined by mood, but they all follow themes of suspense, crime and drama. Some thrillers from the 1970s are things like Tales of the Unexpected, The Sweeny etc. however during these times movies were more popular then tv, as they became more popular in the early 2000s shows like breaking bad and black mirror came out. Some of the most popular and well rated thrillers as of now are squid game as 73% of their reviews being positive with a large online fandom and black doves with 63%.

Popularity of TV Thrillers

Popularity of TV Thrillers The target audience for thrillers, generally, are 25-40 year old's, predominantly male, however they can branch off into different types which appeal to different people. For example, crime/action thrillers tend to appeal to a younger male audience interested in violence, whereas mystery thrillers are aimed more at women, it can be noted that some thrillers have female leads which will probably also appeal more to women. A lot of the appeal of thrillers comes in with uses and gratifications, entertainment is created with drama and tension, a lot of them are also set in appealing places which can give people escapism. The characters are usually in depth as we get insight into their thoughts or intentions which forms relatable characters the audience can identify with.
