The genre became more popular in the early 1900s more in novels and movies before tv series, the genre has many variations that have appeared through the years, which are defined by mood, but they all follow themes of suspense, crime and drama.

Some thrillers from the 1970s are things like Tales of the Unexpected, The Sweeny etc. however during these times movies were more popular then tv, as they became more popular in the early 2000s shows like breaking bad and black mirror came out. Some of the most popular and well rated thrillers as of now are squid game as 73% of their reviews being positive with a large online fandom and black doves with 63%.
